Get a Clew

Get a Clew is a simple Minecraft mod for Fabric that I made for self-serving reasons: my sense of direction is terrible, so if I don’t have some other way to get my bearings I always end up having to dig a staircase to the surface, but if I use a map mod for that, it’s too easy to spoil myself by seeing an ancient city or a trial chamber in the corner of my eye. Get a Clew is the minimum-viable cave navigation aid: it keeps track of your path when you’re underground, and points you back out when you hold a compass.

You can read the source code at https://github.com/spaghetus/get-a-clew, and you can download the mod from its github actions artifacts. I’ve also uploaded a copy of the mod to my webserver so you can download it if github drops the artifacts.

I’m not an expert at modding Minecraft, and I don’t feel the need to become one, so this mod is released as-is. It’s trivial enough that I doubt it would be hard to port to older versions if you’re willing to get your hands dirty, but I’ll only update it myself when I happen to play a newer version.
